DESCRIPTION

This is the Mark 4 version of our very popular power supply.

This battery pack uses 2 x 12v 12Ah sealed lead acid batteries in series to produce a 24v internal supply.  This is converted to 12 volts by a high efficiency DC-DC converter capable of supplying over 8 Amps continuously. The output voltage is regulated and does not vary from full charge to fully discharged.

The BIG One incorporates it’s own built in charger which can charge the batteries at the same time as the unit is supplying power.

Outputs

There are six standard regulated 12 volt outputs on the XLR4F sockets capable of supplying a total current of 8.3 Amps. These outputs are regulated by a high efficiency regulator so the output voltage does not vary from fully charged to the end of the bargraph display.

These outputs are short circuit and overload protected electronically.  Battery voltage is monitored by a precision integrated circuit which will disconnect the batteries when the voltage drops to 10 volts per battery, so preventing over discharge damage.

Each individual output socket is filtered, giving greater than 80dB rejection between sockets.

Auxiliary Input

There is an XLR3M auxiliary input socket on the left side of the unit. This allows a MONSTER Power Supply to be connected, giving the unit limitless capacity

Bargraph Display

Battery capacity is monitored by a 10 segment bargraph display which gives a very accurate indication of the remaining charge.

Full charge is indicated by green segments; the four yellow segments indicate medium charge, and the remaining three red segments show low charge.

Charging

The charging control electronics are built in to the battery pack and the charging input is either 240 or 120 volts AC switchable above the filtered IEC mains socket.

An indicator LED above the bargraph display glows red when fast charging and turns green when charged.

On-Off Switches

The round green push button switches The BIG One on and the red push button switches it off.  One of the segments on the bargraph display will light when the battery is on.

When The BIG One is fully discharged a precision sensor will switch it off to prevent over discharge damage. The unit will not switch on again under load until charged.

The BIG One will switch off if subjected to a severe overload or short circuit. If the power relay buzzes when switching on the unit, it is overloaded and the overload should be removed before attempting to switch on again.

Bargraph Display

The bargraph display indicates how much charge remains in The BIG One. It works like a petrol gauge, indicating full when the green segment at the top of the case is lit and empty when the red segment at the bottom is lit. The gauge is deliberately made more sensitive at the empty end since one is more interested in precisely when the unit is about to run out, rather than whether it is 90% or 95% full. The gauge is load dependant and will show a lower reading for heavier loads when "The BIG One" become partly discharged, since the unit will become exhausted sooner with a heavy load.

So long as a segment is lit on the bargraph display the output voltages are guaranteed regulated to their specified values. Once the last segment has gone out the unit will shortly disconnect itself to prevent damage. It is quite permissible to run the unit down until it disconnects itself; and it is advisable to charge the unit as soon as possible if it has been completely exhausted.

Charging

The BIG One may be charged at any time simply by connecting the unit to the mains via the mains IEC input socket.  Ensure that the mains selector switch is set to the correct mains voltage. Plug the charger into the mains via the IEC mains lead.

The mains input socket is filtered to prevent switching noise radiating back via the lead.

The LED above the bargraph display will light red when the unit is being fast charged, and will go green when the charge controller switches to trickle.

The charge management is completely automatic and contained entirely inside the unit. The BIG One can be left indefinitely connected to the mains without damage.

The charge controller will fast charge if the unit needs it.  If the unit is fully charged and it is then plugged into the mains the charge LED will briefly light red and as the charge controller realises the unit is fully charged it will switch to trickle and turn the LED green.  It can be topped up like this the night before filming to good effect and without damaging the cells in any way (unlike Ni-Cads).

Charging time from flat is about six hours, but The BIG One can be left connected for longer if time is available and an extra 5% charge can eventually be squeezed in, since the LED going green indicates 95% charge, the remaining 5% charge will take about another two hours to complete.

The BIG One can be part charged and used without damage, so it is perfectly OK if the battery is partly discharged to put it on charge and only partly charge it then use it again.  Consider it like a car’s petrol tank that can be topped up at will.

The unit can be charged at the same time as being used if desired.   However, the charger only supplies the 12 volt equivalent of about 5 Amps so current drains from the unit greater that this mean that the unit will never be charged since less is being put in than taken out. The unit will, of course, last much longer if connected to the mains, even it the output current exceeds 5 Amps. In practice it would be unlikely the battery current drain would exceed 5 Amps all the time so the unit would eventually be charged, though this may take much longer if the current drain is substantial.

Remember the bargraph display does not indicate how the charger is doing, only the state of the cells. The charge LED going green is the only true indication of full charge.

Auxiliary Input

There is an XLR3M auxiliary input socket on the left side of the unit. This allows a MONSTER Power Supply to be connected, giving the unit limitless capacity.

Connect The MONSTER using the supplied XLR3 curly lead, and the blue LED on The BIG One should light. The BIG One is now being supplied from The MONSTER and the internal batteries are disconnected. The MONSTER can be charged by The BIG One in the same way as the internal batteries. It will take about 10 hours to fully charge The MONSTER.

Outputs

The six XLR4F sockets give 12 volts at 8.3 Amps maximum in total.

Each socket is individually filtered giving over 80dB rejection between sockets.

Note that the actual voltage is set at 12.60 volts as is normal for these nominal 12 volt power supplies.

These outputs are electronically short circuit protected. In addition to electronic short circuit and overload protection, there is a 10 Amp fuse in series with the cells for additional safety.

bullet

WARNING !!

NEVER replace the fuse with one greater than 10 Amp rating. The internal batteries can produce over 300 Amps on short circuit, so a serious fire hazard could occur if the fuse is shorted out!

Storing The BIG One

Don’t leave The BIG One in a part charged state for extended periods. Charge the unit fully before storing it.

Unlike Ni-Cads, The BIG One will hold its charge for many months. Well over 90% charge is retained for over 3 months.

Charge the unit fully at least once a year.

Store The BIG One upside down, particularly for long periods, as this allows the gel electrolyte to gradually settle to the bottom of the cells.
